Robert Redford refused to do the cliff jump — but Paul Newman insisted on doing his own!
In the iconic scene where Butch and Sundance escape the law by jumping off a massive cliff into a river, the studio originally wanted to use stunt doubles. However, Paul Newman was determined to do his part of the stunt himself, while Redford — who usually loved doing his own stunts — declined to jump due to safety concerns.
Even more interesting: the cliff and the river were actually filmed in two completely different locations, miles apart in separate states. But the editing was so masterfully done that audiences believed it was all one continuous jump — and this was long before modern CGI or digital effects.
The scene became one of the most legendary moments in film history, and the line “I can’t swim!” — shouted by Redford’s character mid-fall — is still quoted to this day.
